On the 16th of October 2018 representatives from ELDC and CCC met outdoors and walked along the seafront to discuss enhancements and improvements that would improve the visitor experience. CCC had suggested that they would contribute funds towards any agreed projects. This and subsequent meetings resulted in the coastal trail with associated artwork to be conceived. Emphasis was placed on the current illuminated mast site which ELDC officers described as past its useful life and due to be replaced. Officers present expressed the view that whatever replaced the mast needed to be iconic. Other artwork and street furniture was also discussed.
Over the next 6 – 12 months extensive consultations with the public in both formal meetings (x3) and informal discussions took place to identify preferred board themes for the trail and to discuss public art. During these meetings shipwrecks, and ship breaking were popular subjects, and this led to artwork being commissioned of the ‘Hera’ which was the largest ship ever to be beached and broken at Mablethorpe.
